▸ Juniper Group, a division of Vela Software and Constellation Software, Inc. has acquired Grupo Avalon Informática y Servicios, a company dedicated to the development of POS and ERP systems for service stations, convenience stores and fuel distribution centres in Spain and Latin America. Following the acquisition, Avalon will operate as an independent division of the Juniper Group.

▸ Juan Gabriel Gomila, one of the most popular programming trainers on Udemy, and Mateu Mercer, ASO expert, have launched an App Store Optimization (ASO) Course.

▸ The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Balearic Islands Health Service(IB-Salut) have signed a collaboration agreement to launch a psychological treatment service based on applying the ‘Smiling is fun’ protocol. This is a web-based programme that will allow primary care doctors to use this tool to treat their patients.

▸ Logistics startup Seniors Boom has reached 2,000 brokered jobs.

▸ Representatives of the companies Robot and Wireless DNA appeared on IB3 news to talk about the global shortage of chips and the possible impact this could have on companies that manufacture these types of components in the Balearic Islands.

TUI shared its Q3 results: Reporting a cash flow before financing of around 320 million euros – positive again for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

▸ Just over a year ago, the news came to light that Mercadona had implemented a facial recognition system in some cities in Spain (Palma among them). This has led to the company being fined 2.5 million euros by the Data Protection Agency (Agencia de Protección de Datos).

We mentioned Civitfun‘s partnership with Booking.com a couple of weeks ago and now more details have aroused. The companies have teamed up to allow guests to check in via the Booking.com app and website. Currently, more than 200,000 rooms are using its tool in more than 20 countries around the world. In addition, the startup claims that in 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Civitfun increased its turnover by 180%.

▸ Travel connections marketplace TravelgateX has just launched TGX4Startup a programme that aims to help startups around the world compete with the big players in the industry by accelerating the onboarding of products for their customers in a simple and scalable way.

▸ Spanish startup Venvirotech, co-founded by the Mallorcan Noelia Márquez, which aims to become a world leader in the production of bioplastics from organic waste, has closed an €11 million financing round. The operation has been led by an industrial investor, whose name has not been disclosed, and has counted with the participation of a group of six business angels, the family office of the Gassó family (former owner of the company Gaes) and Giribets 2000.

▸ The startup Pecolo, accelerated by Lanzadera, has just launched its online shopping app for small local businesses with same-day home delivery.

▸ This summer Ibiza will be home to the first drone meal delivery service to boats off its coast. Users will be able to order from their yacht via the DroneToYacht app or website and then just wait for their food to arrive, literally, flying.

▸ A team of researchers from the University of the Balearic Islands has developed a system that makes it possible to implement one of the most widely used clinical tools for detecting the deterioration of equilibrium and preventing the risk of falling.

▸ The Ibiza-based foodtech startup Ketonico has received €1.1 million in its first funding round. Ketonico develops and markets its own quality products to improve the lives of society while offering nutritional advice, subscription service and active monitoring to customers.

▸ Logitravel and Viajes El Corte Inglés merge to create a €3,500M turnover company. For a turnover of 2.7 billion euros for VECI and 800 million euros for Logitravel, the resulting company will have an approximate split of 70% for VECI and 30% for Logitravel.

▸ Robot SA, a technology company specialized in building automation systems, has received today the award SME of the Year 2021 of the Balearic Islands, an award granted by Banco Santander, the Chamber of Spain and the Chamber of Mallorca. Idonia Health was awarded an accessit in the category of Innovation and Digitalization.

▸ The internet provider and radio and television broadcasting company, fibwi, continues its expansion, with GRUP 4’s regional television station acquisition.

▸ KulTours, a platform that links information on cultural works with tourist routes and allows a person to enter the title of a book or movie and receive suggestions for tourist routes that pass through this book or movie, has won the international hackathon Miro in Cube, held simultaneously in Palma, Barcelona and Perpignan. ▸ Diario de Mallorca has published a list of the technology companies with the highest turnover in the Balearic Islands (2019 data). Prodigios Interactivos S.A. (part of Meliá), leads the list with a turnover of around 164 million euros and profits of 14.1 million and 458 employees. Next is Hotelbeds Technology (1st on the list the previous 3 years) with a turnover of 47.2 million euros, profits of 1.3 million euros, and 301 employees. It is followed by Omniaccess S.L. (turnover 38 million, profit 8 million and 96 employees). The fourth is Global Obi S.L. (9.4 million invoiced, profits of 500K euros and 60 employees). Closes the top 5 (this is as far as they have compiled the list) Travel Compositor that has recorded a turnover of 8.5 million, more than 800,000 euros of profit and a staff of 37 employees.

▸ Hotelinking is now connected with the Stay App hotel app, allowing to cross-reference the data obtained by Hotelinking‘s captive portal with the data already existing in the hotel’s PMS in order to redirect guests to the hotel’s personalized app in Stay App.

▸ Article in El País about Scoolinary, the gastronomy cyberschool founded by Jordi Ber and Martín Caleau (Habitissimo co-founders). Started with an initial investment of 500,000 euros and currently have 1,000 subscribers who have purchased more than 10,000 courses.

▸ Jorge Morell, technology lawyer at LegalTechies, participates in a Maldita.es report about where do companies keep our personal data.

▸ 10 Spanish TravelTechs that will fly without limits in 2021, according to Startups’ Oasis. The list includes the Mallorca-based TravelgateX, Roibos and Hotelbreak.

▸ After meeting more than 400 requirements, Palma has been recognized by the Secretary of State for Tourism as a Smart Tourism Destination. The award ceremony took place in Madrid during the celebration of FITUR.0.

▸ Official launch of IberianTax, a startup hosted at the ParcBit business incubator, which has developed a SaaS that allows foreigners with properties in Spain to file and pay their own non-resident tax from anywhere in the world and without the need for tax knowledge.

▸ The agency Borbalán has published the new Businesscards.eco website, a platform for freelancers and companies to create their own e-Cards.

▸ Call for applications for the Cercle d’Economia de Mallorca Awards is now open. They are looking for ideas to improve people’s living conditions and health or ideas that contribute to environmental sustainability. The winning idea will receive a cash prize of €7,000 and other benefits.

▸ Netin Club lands in Palma. It is a startup private equity investment fund in Palma de Mallorca that manages a network of private investors that connects local business projects that want to grow. Last year, nationwide, they received 600 applications, of which 40 were approved and raised a total of €3M in investment.

▸ VisitBot was officially presented at FITUR. It is a bot developed by APSL, based on its yed.ai solution, which provides information on what to visit and do on the island of Menorca.

▸ Emprendedores magazine has published an article in which it lists 83 brilliant business ideas classified by autonomous communities. In the Balearic Islands, it has highlighted the startups Idonia Health (accessibility to medical imaging tests), Apprentium (online school for construction), Mansión Games (independent video game studio) and Modosmart (IoT for holiday accommodation management).

▸ Report on the startup Saigu Cosmetics, an ecological make-up brand launched in 2019 by two Menorcans. Throughout the article, they review the trajectory of the young company, which went through one of Lanzadera’s acceleration programmes and last year reached a turnover of €350,000.

▸ Civitfun has announced a new product: online check-in through Booking.com. Thanks to this new partnership, the Mallorcan startup is positioned as the official online check-in provider of the booking platform. From now on, anyone who has made a reservation on Booking.com will be able to check-in online thanks to Civitfun’s technology.

▸ IB-Salut’s vaccination website managed more than 12,000 appointments in one day.

▸ Germán Vidal, CEO and co-founder of Apprentium, participated in IB3’s radio program La Gran Vida (min 29 to 55). A few weeks ago we published a story about the startup in our Tech Stories.
